100 Must Read Books for Young Literary Americanists

以下に掲げるのは、21世紀のアメリカ文学専攻大学院生が最低限読んでおくべき必読書を絞りに絞って100冊、ABC順に列挙したリストである。最初に重々承知しておいて貰わねばならないが、これはカタログではない。したがって、読者を消費者に見立てて懇切丁寧に施された商品解説や初学者のための注釈などは存在しない。いやしくも大学院英米文学専攻に入ったからには何らかの形でそのプロフェッショナルになることが前提されているわけだから、これはその目的達成のためには最低限読んでおかないとお話にならない、たった 100冊のテクスト群なのだ。文学と文化の相乗作用や学際的研究といった格好のいい話題を口にするのは、その次の段階である。
ここに挙げた著者や書物の固有名詞は、これまで大学院の授業を受講した院生にとっては散々耳にしてきたものばかりのはずだが、にも関わらず今回あえて公表することにしたのは、かつて選者自身が大学院生だった頃の必読書であり、今日でもその地位を断じて失っていないはずのテクスト群に関する常識が、必ずしも共有されていない気がしたためだ。 100冊のうち 80冊を洋書、 20冊を和書に振り分けた理由も、そこにある。我々が英米における先人のみならず日本自体における先人の大きな先行研究に知らず知らずのうちに負っていることを忘れることは、研究公正の姿勢に欠けるであろうから。中には、たまたま日本語で書かれているだけで、その内容は国際的な普遍的価値を孕む業績も含まれている。そうしたことを見抜くだけの批評眼を養うことも、大学院生の務めだ。
このリストをこなしていく者は、むしろ自分自身が注釈者となって、一冊一冊にコメントを付していくのがよい。すると、読破したのちには、この ABC順のリストのうち何冊かずつをカテゴリー別に再配列したくなるだろう。例えば批評史的常識を超えて、アウエルバッハとバーコヴィッチ、ポール・ド・マンが袖触れ合うスリリングな瞬間も体験するかもしれない。やがてそうした再配列作業を成し終えた大学院生諸君は、自身の研究水準が世界のどのあたりに到達しているかを見定める批評眼が備わっていることに、自ずと気づくはずである。
