　　　20世紀はアメリカの世紀だった。1898年の米西戦争で勝利して以降、世界初の民主主義の実験場として始まったはずのこの国は、何と自ら批判してきたはずの帝国主義というゲームに積極的に参加することになった。そして第二次世界大戦以降の米ソ冷戦時代には、アメリカを中心に考えさえすれば世界平和が相対的に保障されるという「パックス・アメリカーナ」の理念が蔓延した。まさに 19世紀の「パックス・ブリタニカ」に取って代わったのである。

　　　かくして、 アメリカ文学といえば 20世紀ではないか、という第一印象がもたらされる。帝国主義化して軍事経済的競争力というハードパワーにおいて圧倒的なアメリカは、膨大な学術的知性を総動員して旧世界に優るとも劣らぬアメリカ文学史を構築し、芸術文化的創造力というソフトパワーにおいても卓越した傑作を生み出してきたからである。今でもアメリカ文学といえばヘミングウェイの顔を真っ先に連想する向きが多いだろう。

　　　けれども、そうした 20世紀のアメリカ文学を読み込めば読み込むほどに、それが 17世紀ピューリタン植民地時代や 18世紀独立革命時代、 19世紀ロマン主義時代の遺産と決して無縁ではないことがわかる。

　　　ここに掲げるのは、 1999年度に文学部設置総合講座「 20世紀のトップ 100」の一環として用意した講義用ハンドアウト「 20世紀アメリカ文学のトップ 100」を 、以後 20年余を経た 2020年の視点から大幅に加筆改稿したリストである。ライマン・フランク・ボームの『オズの不思議な魔法使い』からマーク・ダニエレブスキの『紙葉の家』まで、文字通り百年間における 20世紀アメリカ文学の傑作群から削りに削って厳選した。そこには詩と小説、戯曲はもちろん、ロレンスやホフマンに代表される批評的研究書を含むノンフィクションも入っている。邦訳が複数あるものも少なくないので、いちいち挙げなかったが、この必読書群を順次読み進めば、いかに現代アメリカ文学といえども 330年にも及ぶアメリカ史を、ひいては環大西洋史、転じては環太平洋史を痛切に意識してきたかが実感されるはずだ。
