Young Americans in Literature
What Tatsumi produces in this book is in fact a complex work of assemblage that provides an excellent introduction to his writing, starting as it does from some of his earliest efforts――an essay that originated in a graduate seminar taught by Colacurcio at Cornell, for example, begins the Introduction――before winding its way through more recent interventions, and ending, full-circle, with a return to another graduate seminar paper, now revised, repurposed and "reloaded," so to speak.――Taras Alexander Sak, Sky-Hawk: The Journal of the Melville Society of Japan, no.33 (2019), pp. 84-88. p.85

With "post-Romantic," Tatsumi signals the belatedness of the American writers who rethought and revised English Romanticism in the 1840s and 1850s, a temporal disconnect that inspired their work with a self-reflexivity that anticipates modernism and postmodemism. . . . Put differently, the book blends historicist and poststructuralist interpretive practices (think print history alongside Paul de Man) in analyses of how antebellum literature spoke to its political moment and how various twentieth and twenty-first century riffs on the earlier period's literature bring light to meanings hitherto buried in those texts. ――Dawn Coleman, Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies, vol.21, no.3 (October 2019, Melville Society).

Tatsumi aims less for exhaustive argumentation than for stimulating illumination throughout the volume, and he is highly successful in offering this intellectual stimulation to his readers. The book provokes questions about what it would mean to be less parochial in our understanding of how literature in the nineteenth-century United States connects with literatures from other times and places and how an enriched appreciation of the romantic roots of this literature may allow for a wider and deeper sense of its connections across time and space. The volume also models a way in which author studies can come together with impulses toward transnationalism, interdisciplinarity, and the analysis of literary networks to produce a way of reading that is distinct from both traditional author-centered approaches and from many of the author-skeptical approaches that have shaped nineteenth-century US literary studies in recent years. As Poe self-consciously did in so many of his stories and poems, Tatsumi has produced a volume of criticism that is distinguished by its effect: the way in which encountering a short, provocative piece can change, perhaps irrevocably, the way the reader sees the world and the texts that she reads. ――Brian Yothers, "Reading Poe across Time and Space." Poe Studies: Hitory, Theory, Interpretation, vol.52 (2019), pp. E3-E7. Pp. E6-E7.

Writing America: Literary Landmarks from Walden Pond to Wounded Knee
――ジョエル・フィスター(ウェスリアン大学教授、近著に Surveyors of Customs: American Literature as Cultural Analysis
Henry James and the Art of Power
