このたび刊行された The Liverpool Companion to World Science Fiction Film には、SF 映画を題材に、全14本の論考が収録されております。本書で取り上げられる映画作品は数多く、アフリカ、アジア、ヨーロッパ、アメリカといった空間的バラエティのみならず、映画創成期から、戦後冷戦期を経て、ネットや YouTube が浸透した現代の作品も広くカバー！各地域が抱える SF 映画というジャンルの歴史や、ハリウッド映画との相互補完的な関係、さらには、各時代各地域に胚胎されてきた政治、環境、人種、ジェンダーなどの問題を参照することを通じ、SF 映画の多様性と面白さがあらためて浮き彫りされていきます。

巽先生のご論文 "On the Monstrous Planet: or, How Godzilla Took a Roman Holiday" では、1954年公開の映画『ゴジラ』が取り上げられ、その語源と起源はもちろんのこと、明治維新期より「恐竜」伝説が神道に組み込まれていた背景や、「怪獣」をめぐる文学的想像力の環太平洋的な相互交渉を詳細に確認されながら、ゴジラがいかに、日本の高度成長期を盛り上げてきた国民的英雄、あるいは「キメラ」であったかが、探求されています。映画、SF にご興味のある方は、ぜひお見逃しなく！
