本書  Poe Spaces: Within and Beyond the Spacial Turnは、編者 Philip Edward Phillips が Palgraveのブック・シリーズ（Geocriticism and Spatial Literary Studies）で刊行した前書 Poe and Place (2018) の延長線上に位置付けられ、前書同様に、文学的・伝記的・文化的・視覚的・文学史的な諸関係を「マッピング」することにより、これまで未知であった結びつきや思想的文化的関係性を明らかにし、ポー研究および空間的文学批評（Spatial Literary Criticism）に貢献することを目論みます。「場所」（place）および「空間」（space）との関係性に着目してポーを探究することにより、ポーの環大西洋的な親和性および世界的な影響をめぐる近年の批評的議論にも寄与することを目指します。全体としては、全 18本の論考を収録、四部構成、第一部は“Temporal and Atemporal Spaces,” 第二部は“Social and Political Spaces,” 第三部は“Psychological and Imaginative Spaces,” そして最後の第四部は“Transnational and Translated Space”となっています。各パートでは、「空間」という考えを関連する概念の組み合わせとともに提示し、ポーの人生や作品、そして彼が関わったさまざまな「空間」を新しい視点から読むための場を提供します。 

第二部 “Social and Political Spaces”に収録された巽先生による第十章 “Purloined Voices, Paranoid Spaces: Poe, de Man, and Nixon”は、ポーの「盗まれた手紙」に「常にすでに」埋め込まれている「パラノイド・スペース」の潜在性を明らかにし、政治史および文学史における学問的な盲点に関する新たな洞察を提示します。リチャード・ホフスタッターの「パラノイド・スタイル」に依拠しつつ、デイヴィッド・ブライアン・デイヴィスを経由して、まずはアンテベラム期のアメリカ小説の特徴として「パラノイド・スペース」を浮かびあがらせ、ポーの「盗まれた手紙」をその最たるものの一つとして提示します。また、「盗まれた手紙」とアレクサンドル・デュマの『三銃士』を重ね合わせ、後者から前者への影響の可能性を検討します。そして、ポーの「盗まれた手紙」がラカンとデリダに精読され、ド・マンにルソーに関する「盗まれたリボン」論を書かせることになる「ポーの「盗まれた手紙」をめぐる理論的意味作用のメビウス的循環」のありようをこれまであまり顧みられてこなかった「ポー・リヴァイヴァル」と位置付け、ウォーターゲイト事件を併せて再読することで、「パラノイド・スペース」という国境横断的知性史における死角を明らかにしていきます。
