本書は、2020年 2月に開催され、巽先生もご参加された The 2nd International EAPSA Conferenceをもとにして編集されたもので（※CPA詳細）、あらためて「ポーの受容」に光をあてています。第一部 “Poe’s Echoes of the Classical World and his Current Legacy”は、主にギリシャにおけるポーの古典的・ポストモダン的読解を提示しています。第二部 “Poe and Modernism”は、ポーの作品をモダニズムの視座から読み解くもので、ポーに対して厳しい批判をくだしていた T・S・エリオットとの関係性が分析されています。第三部 “Poe’s Readership in Spain”は、ポーの作品がスペインの読者にいかに受容されてきたかが検討されています。最後の第四部 “Poe’s Long and Far-Reaching Legacy”は、アメリカのみならずその他の国でポー作品が読者にいかに影響を与え、いかなる翻案を生み出してきたかが考察されています。
巽先生の論文 “The Man of the Crowd and His Descendants: Poe, Rampo, and Sakate”は、ポーの短篇「群衆の人」を出発点にしながら、それが 20世紀前半の江戸川乱歩の短篇「屋根裏の散歩者」に、ひいては 20世紀後半の坂手洋二の演劇「屋根裏」にいかに接続されるのか、都市の変遷や「引きこもり」のありようにも注目されながら、その意義について脱半球的かつ脱時間的視座から論じています。ご関心のある方は、ぜひご一読ください！
